Cathy Award – ‘Our Commitment to Inclusion’
Since our founding in 2021, inclusion has been a core value of the Bristol Bodyboarders Club. From the beginning, we’ve championed the idea that this club should be a welcoming space for anyone who shares a passion for bodyboarding—free from prejudice, ego, or exclusion.
As a committee, we’ve always tried to foster a culture of fun, respect, and camaraderie. One tradition that has been part of our club from the early days is the “Cathy Award,” given out in good humour to celebrate the most memorable Wipeout at our monthly meets.
However, through open and ongoing discussions, we’ve come to recognise that what began as light-hearted fun may unintentionally create barriers for some. For those considering joining the club—or for current members who may feel uncomfortable—we want to ensure we’re always creating a space where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.
After thoughtful consideration, the committee has made the decision to retire the Cathy Award. This is not about removing fun or tradition, but about living up to the values we hold dear and ensuring the club remains a welcoming and inclusive space for all.
We understand that this decision may come as a surprise and spark discussion among members. That’s okay—and we welcome those conversations. But ultimately, our responsibility is to ensure that every member of the Bristol Bodyboarders Club feels they belong.
Thank you for being part of our community, and for helping us build a club that’s not only about riding waves but also lifting each other up.
